About the Project

Every year, Malone University screens student-made films at the Open Frame Film Festival. This year marks the seventh year the festival has been held, and in that time over 50 films have been produced.

A recent development of the film festival includes a contest to select two production teams to make films sponsored by the communication arts department.

"Definition" is the product of the contest this year, written and directed by Alyssa Pearson.

A bit about the script: Val Carter lives in monotony. The smallest thing out of order brings catastrophic consequences--to the point where she breaks down. Disgusted by the world she lives in, she tries to escape it. On a whim, she decides to go camping--with just a tarp and some rope to make shelter. Disbelieving that anything can relieve her of the trials of her bad day, she refuses to interact with the people who surround her, despite their obvious interest. The farther she is from familiarity, however, the more she realizes that her world and her trials are very small indeed. Hypnotized by a loving family who offers friendship, she joins their campfire and discovers that assigning meaning to her life does not need to be so definite.
